      Honora Dohoney (F)
      b. circa 1835, d. 5 December 1915

      Relationship=Great-grandaunt of John Patrick Karl.

      Appears on charts:
           Descendant Chart for Michael Dohoney/Dahoney

           Honora Dohoney, daughter of Michael Dohoney/Dahoney and Sarah (--?--), was born circa 1835 in Ireland.1,2,3

      Circa 1850, when Honora was at an unknown age old, her father, Michael Dohoney/Dahoney, died. His wife's obituary states that he died two years before she came to America.4,5

      Honora Dohoney immigrated circa 1851 to America.6

      Honora Dohoney was Roman Catholic; member of St. Peter's Church.

      Nora was listed in the 1870 US Federal Census of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 11 June 1870. The dwelling address was 1st Ward, 418. She was living and working in the household of George Albree, a 67-year-old shoe dealer from Massachusetts, who listed the value of his real estate at $30,000 and his personal estate at $100,000. George's daughter Elizabeth, 30 years old, kept house for him, and his 32-year-old son Robert, a galvanizer, also lived there. Besides Nora, there was also a 62-year-old housekeeper by the name of Isabella Haines.7

      Nora Dohoney was working as a domestic servant in June 1870 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.7

      Michael Kenefick, a fellow researcher, reports that "I have found newspaper articles on Honora. She seemed to have a drinking problem. She managed a saloon in the Allicana area in Jefferson County, Ohio in the mid 1880's."8

      A newspaper clipping, probably from the late 1800s, relates the following story of sibling strife between Honora and one of her sisters:
           "The next to face the bar was Queen Honora Dohona [sic], of Ninevah. The reason she appeared at the bar this morning was by reason of a warrent issued on complaint of her sister, Mrs. Kenefeck [sic], who also resides in the north end. Honora had been looking upon the wine when it was red and wiggled in the glass, and then sallied forth and fired a stone through a window of the Kenefeck [sic] residence. The missive struck Mrs. Kenefeck [sic] over the left eye, cutting a bad gash. She was let off with $5, including costs, on her own voluntary declaration that she intended to leave the city, a statement that almost overwhelmed the police force with joy."9

      Honora Dohoney moved in 1900 to the Massillon State Hospital for the Insane, Erie Street, Stark County, Ohio, from Jefferson County (probably Steubenville). She appeared to have a drinking problem, which may have pickled her brain, and since she was single there was probably no way her sisters could manage to take care of her at home. When she entered the hospital, it had been open only two years.10,11

      Honora Dohoney died on 5 December 1915 in Massillon, Stark County, Ohio, of "mammary carcinoma", which she had suffered from for nearly two years; the contributory cause listed on her death certificate was "senile dementia". She died at 11:45 p.m.12

      Honora Dohoney was buried on 7 December 1915 in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, which is located in Steubenville, Ohio.14,15
