David Henry Sprong graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, with honors from the law department.2 David settled the Sprong farm in Atchison, Kansas, in 1858; the exact date of the entry in the homestead book kept at the Atchison County Clerk's office is 26 August 1858. The land patent is dated August 1st of the following year and reads as follows: [the left margin reads "Patent US To David H Sprong"] The United States of America To all to whom these presents shall come greeting Whereas in pursuance of the act of Congress approved September 28 a850 entitled "An act granting Bounty land to certain officers and soldiers who have been engaged in the Military service of the United States["] Warrant no 15,654 for 160 acres issued in favor of Ebenezer Swift assistant Surgeon United States army Mexican War has been returned to the General Land office with evidence that the same has been duly located upon the Sourth West quarter of Section twenty-two in Township seven of Range Twenty-one in the district of lands subject to sale [of? or?] Kickapoo Kansas containing one hundred and sixty acres according to the official plat of the survey of the said land returned to the general land office by the surveyor General which has been assigned to David H Sprong. Now knowing that there is therefore Granted by the United States unto the said David H Sprong the tract of land above described. To have and to hold the said tract of land with the appurtenances thereof until the said David H Sprong and to his heirs and assigns forever. In testimony whereof I, James Buchanan, President of the United States of America have caused these letters to be made Patent and the seal of the General land office to be hereunto affixed. Given under my hand at the City of Washington the first day of August in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty nine and of the independence of the United States the Eighty fourth By the President James Buchanan By JB Leonard [--?--] J. McGranger [--?--] of the General land office.3,4 On 4 June 1860, David Henry Sprong married Caroline Amelia King in St. Louis, Missouri. On 30 September 1862, David Henry Sprong married Rachel Marie Halladay, daughter of Dandridge Halladay and Ann Maria Carson, in Round Prairie, Kansas.2 An article appeared in the Topeka Capital on 20 September 1914 that celebrated the number of years David had been a Mason. It read, in part, "Potter boasts of a citizen who has several records that probably cannot be beaten in this state. David H. Sprong, of this place, has been a Mason for sixty-one years, and was secretary of Kickapoo Lodge No. 4, A. F. & A. M., for thirty-two years. Kickapoo Lodge, which now has its headquarters in Potter, is the fourth oldest Masonic lodge in Kansas. It was originally organized at the old town of Kickapoo, east of here, in November, 1855, and later moved to Potter. Mr. Sprong has been a member of Kickapoo Lodge for more than half a century. He first became a Mason in Philadelphia in 1853. He was at one time a Philadelphia lawyer. He was admitted to the bar under Judge William D. Kelley, of national fame, who afterwards was known in Congress as "Pig Iron Kelley." On account of poor health Mr. Sprong came to Kansas in 1857, abjured the law, and engaged successfully in farming. He is now retired and living in Potter at the age of 82."5 On 25 April 1923 his wife Rachel Marie Halladay died at age 84 in Potter, Kansas, leaving David a widower at 90 years old.6,2,7 David Henry Sprong died on 4 July 1924 at the home of his son, George Sprong, Round Prairie, Kansas, at age 91.2 He was buried in Round Prairie Cemetery, which is located in Leavenworth County, Kansas.8 |

On 6 November 1901, David Henry Sprong Jr. married Myrtle Grable, daughter of Charles Austin Grable and Lucy Critchfield, in Effingham, Kansas. David and Myrtle went to California because of "the Bradens--they had been friends in Kansas, and Arthur Braden offered "Hal" a job teaching languages at Cal Christian College, where he was president. I think it was 1923. My parents (Norman and Alma Nell) were in high school at the time."3 On 24 September 1950 David died in Los Angeles, California, at age 79, leaving Myrtle a widow.1 He was buried in Los Angeles, California.1 |
