John Kenefick
John Kenefick was baptized on 10 July 1836 in Rathanker (parish of Passage West/Monkstown/Barnahely), County Cork, Ireland.3 Although his birth date and/or place has also been reported as 24 June 1839, 17 March 1840, and June 1841, I believe that information to be incorrect . I place the most reliance on the baptismal parish registers as those are far closer to the actual time of his birth than documents recorded more than fifty years later.2,4,5,6,7,8,9

John Kenefick immigrated in September 1855 to America.10,2,11,12

John Kenefick was Roman Catholic and a member of St. Peter's Church.2 He was naturalized on 18 December 1866 in Jefferson County, Ohio.10,11,13

Jno appeared in the 1870 US Federal Census of Pittsburgh (5th Ward), Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, enumerated 1 July 1870. He was recorded as the head of a household that also included Bridget, Mary and Ellen Kenefick. Bridget is his wife, and Ellen and Mary their two children. Note that John is listed as 40 years old when he was only 30. They lived at dwelling number 159 along with two other families. He declared no real estate and placed a value on his personal property of $100 (about $1300 in 2002 dollars, adjusted for inflation).16

He was employed as a day laborer.16

Before June 1880, his daughter Ellen died.6

John appeared in the 1880 US Federal Census of Steubenville (Fifth Ward), Jefferson County, Ohio, enumerated 3 June 1880. He was recorded as the head of a household that also included his wife, Bridget, his son Thomas, his daughters Mary A., Sara I., Nellie and Fanny. They lived at Sherman Avenue.

He was a laborer, as per the 1880 Census.6

He was a furnace laborer, probably on the railroad; his occupation was also reported as a steel mill laborer.13

John appeared in the 1900 US Federal Census of Steubenville, Jefferson County (Steubenville Township), Ohio, enumerated 1 June 1900. He was recorded as the head of a household that also included his wife, Bridget, his sons Thomas, John and Michael, his daughters Hanna, Frances and Margaret. They lived at 25 Knoxville Road, a house that was owned free and clear of a mortgage. Enumerated as living nearby was Nellie, his daughter, along with her husband William Cotman and their daugher Mary.13

On 1 February 1918 his wife Bridget Dohoney died at age 75 in Steubenville, of uremia complicated at various times with diarrhea, leaving John a widower at 81 years old. She had last been seen by a doctor three months before her death.17,18,19,20

John Kenefick provided the information necessary to complete the death certificate for Bridget Dohoney, his wife.21

John Kenefick died on 31 July 1928 in Steubenville, at age 92 of a two-year-long illness of dropsy and heart trouble (myocarditis).
