         Descendant Chart for William McCullough

Charles John McCullough, son of William McCullough and Elnora Cameron, was born on 11 March 1834 possibly Pennsylvania or W. Virginia.3,4,5,6

Charles John McCullough was Presbyterian and a member of the United Presbyterian Church.

Circa 1863, Charles John McCullough married Sarah Jane Jeffrey, daughter of John Jeffrey and Jane Weaver.7,8

He was a farmer in July 1870 in Jefferson County (Knox Township), Ohio.1

Charles appeared in the 1870 US Federal Census of Jefferson County (Knox Township), Ohio, enumerated 15 July 1870. He was recorded as the head of a household that also included Sarah J., Jenny F., Esthella O. and John C.. Sarah was his wife, and the other three were their children. They lived at dwelling number 224. As well as his wife and children, a retired farmer named Samuel Sanders, a white male aged 62 with personal property of $300, also lived in the household; his birth place is given as the same as Charles--either N. or W. Virginia. Charles' real estate was valued at $4,000, and he placed a value of $600 on his personal property.1 Charles is recorded as a U.S. citizen, aged 35. The census taker did not indicate that either of his parents were of foreign birth.1

He was a laborer; ten years prior he had been listed as a farmer, so he may not have been able to make a go of that, or perhaps he voluntarily gave it up. He had moved into the city of Steubenville from Knox Township, where he'd been in 1870.9

Charles appeared in the 1880 US Federal Census of Steubenville (Third Ward), Jefferson County, Ohio, enumerated 9 June 1880. He was recorded as the head of a household that also included his wife, Sarah J., his son John J., his daughters Jennie F., Stella A., Kate E. and Louella. They lived at North Seventh Street, None of the children are listed as having attended school within the census year. The family was probably not in good financial straits as both Charles and his 11-year-old son John are listed as being out of work for the previous six months.9

On 30 September 1891, his daughter Esthella O. died of inflammation of the bowels. She had become ill a week before her death and had been in great pain.10,11

He was an insurance agent in 1900.12

Charles appeared in the 1900 US Federal Census of Steubenville, Jefferson County (Steubenville Township), Ohio, enumerated 1 June 1900. He was recorded as the head of a household that also included his wife, Sarah J., his daughter LuLu. They lived at 722 Franklin Avenue, a house owned free and clear of a mortgage (although the census schedule is hard to read). Enumerated as living nearby was John Jeffrey McCullough and Sadie, his son and daughter-in-law, along with their first child.12

On 14 December 1909 Charles died at 904 Wabash Avenue, Youngstown, Ohio, at age 75 of pleuro-pneumonia, also called "lobar pneumonia", with which he had fallen ill four days previously, leaving Sarah a widow. He died at 12:20 a.m. while visiting his daughter Jennie.13,14,15 He was buried on 17 December 1909 in Steubenville, Ohio.14,16

    John Jeffrey McCullough
    Late 1800s
John Jeffrey McCullough, son of Charles John McCullough and Sarah Jane Jeffrey, was born on 26 December 1868 in Toronto, Jefferson County (Knox Township), Ohio.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8

John Jeffrey McCullough was born into a Presbyterian family but married an Irish Catholic girl and followed the Roman Catholic teachings throughout his life (for instance, he went along with the rest of the family in abstaining from eating meat on Fridays, and he attended the Men's Missions at St. Peter's Church). His youngest daughter, Kitty Lou, says that he did not formally convert, however, until he was on his deathbed.9

John C. was listed on 15 July 1870 as a household member living with Charles McCullough Jr. on the 1870 US Federal Census of Jefferson County (Knox Township), Ohio, enumerated 15 July 1870. Charles was Sarah's husband and the father of Jenny, Esthella, and John; his relationship to Samuel Sanders is unknown. They lived at dwelling number 224. As well as his wife and children, a retired farmer named Samuel Sanders, a white male aged 62 with personal property of $300, also lived in the household; his birth place is given as the same as Charles--either N. or W. Virginia. Charles' real estate was valued at $4,000, and he placed a value of $600 on his personal property.10

John Jeffrey McCullough attended very little school.

He was already working in the glass house at the age of 11, and had been doing so since at least 1879 as the US Census taken in June 1880 indicated that he'd been out of work six months. Even though out of work, he had not been attending school.4

John was listed as a son in the 1880 US Federal Census, enumerated 9 June 1880, in the household of Charles McCullough and Sarah J., of Steubenville (Third Ward), Jefferson County, Ohio. They lived at North Seventh Street.4

John worked instead of getting an education himself in order to put his two sisters, Cate and Lou, through school. His oldest daughter, Mary Alice (called Sister), always resented her aunts because she thought they took advantage of him.9

In 1897, John Jeffrey McCullough married Sarah Isabella Kenefick, daughter of John Kenefick and Bridget Dohoney, in Steubenville, Ohio.1,11

John and Sadie were married by a Catholic priest but not in a church (their daughter Kitty Lou believes they may have been married at the priest's home), since John had not converted to Catholicism.9

John appeared in the 1900 US Federal Census of Steubenville, Jefferson County (Steubenville Township), Ohio, enumerated 5 June 1900. He was recorded as the head of a household that also included his wife, Sadie, his son John. They lived at 916 Seventh Street, a rented house. Enumerated as living nearby was Charles McCullough, Sarah and LuLu, John's parents and sister, who lived a few blocks away. John had been out of work for two months of the year.5,12

John Jeffrey McCullough was a chimney glassblower (on the census form, the word after "chimney" is difficult to decipher).5

John Jeffrey McCullough was a flint glassblower/glassworker. Select a Role for the 1910 Census.6,13

On 22 January 1913, his son Michael Paul died of broncho-pneumonia complicated by malnutrition at the age of 1 month and 11 days. He had been seen by a doctor four days prior to his death.14

John Jeffrey McCullough provided the information necessary to complete the death certificate for Michael Paul McCullough, his infant son.14 Select a Role for the 1920 Census.

In June 1926 John died in Steubenville, at age 57 of bronchopneumonia at 8:30 in the evening, leaving Sadie a widow. He had been ill for a little while, but once he caught the pneumonia he was dead within three days.1,15,16 He was buried on 14 June 1926 in Union Cemetery, which is located in Steubenville, Ohio.15
