Charles John McCullough, son of William McCullough and Elnora Cameron, was born on 11 March 1834 possibly Pennsylvania or W. Virginia.3,4,5,6
Charles John McCullough was Presbyterian and a member of the United Presbyterian Church. Circa 1863, Charles John McCullough married Sarah Jane Jeffrey, daughter of John Jeffrey and Jane Weaver.7,8 He was a farmer in July 1870 in Jefferson County (Knox Township), Ohio.1 Charles appeared in the 1870 US Federal Census of Jefferson County (Knox Township), Ohio, enumerated 15 July 1870. He was recorded as the head of a household that also included Sarah J., Jenny F., Esthella O. and John C.. Sarah was his wife, and the other three were their children. They lived at dwelling number 224. As well as his wife and children, a retired farmer named Samuel Sanders, a white male aged 62 with personal property of $300, also lived in the household; his birth place is given as the same as Charles--either N. or W. Virginia. Charles' real estate was valued at $4,000, and he placed a value of $600 on his personal property.1 Charles is recorded as a U.S. citizen, aged 35. The census taker did not indicate that either of his parents were of foreign birth.1 He was a laborer; ten years prior he had been listed as a farmer, so he may not have been able to make a go of that, or perhaps he voluntarily gave it up. He had moved into the city of Steubenville from Knox Township, where he'd been in 1870.9 Charles appeared in the 1880 US Federal Census of Steubenville (Third Ward), Jefferson County, Ohio, enumerated 9 June 1880. He was recorded as the head of a household that also included his wife, Sarah J., his son John J., his daughters Jennie F., Stella A., Kate E. and Louella. They lived at North Seventh Street, None of the children are listed as having attended school within the census year. The family was probably not in good financial straits as both Charles and his 11-year-old son John are listed as being out of work for the previous six months.9 On 30 September 1891, his daughter Esthella O. died of inflammation of the bowels. She had become ill a week before her death and had been in great pain.10,11 He was an insurance agent in 1900.12 Charles appeared in the 1900 US Federal Census of Steubenville, Jefferson County (Steubenville Township), Ohio, enumerated 1 June 1900. He was recorded as the head of a household that also included his wife, Sarah J., his daughter LuLu. They lived at 722 Franklin Avenue, a house owned free and clear of a mortgage (although the census schedule is hard to read). Enumerated as living nearby was John Jeffrey McCullough and Sadie, his son and daughter-in-law, along with their first child.12 On 14 December 1909 Charles died at 904 Wabash Avenue, Youngstown, Ohio, at age 75 of pleuro-pneumonia, also called "lobar pneumonia", with which he had fallen ill four days previously, leaving Sarah a widow. He died at 12:20 a.m. while visiting his daughter Jennie.13,14,15 He was buried on 17 December 1909 in Steubenville, Ohio.14,16 |
