John worked instead of getting an education himself in order to put his two sisters, Cate and Lou, through school. His oldest daughter, Mary Alice (called Sister), always resented her aunts because she thought they took advantage of him.1 Mary Alice McCullough, daughter of John Jeffrey McCullough and Sarah Isabella Kenefick, was born on 30 September 1900 in Steubenville, Ohio. Mary Alice McCullough was Roman Catholic. On 22 January 1913, her brother Michael Paul died of broncho-pneumonia complicated by malnutrition at the age of 1 month and 11 days. He had been seen by a doctor four days prior to his death.2 Circa 1921, Mary Alice McCullough married James J. Daugherty, son of (--?--) Daugherty, in Girard, Ohio.3,4 In June 1926, when Mary was 25 years and 8 months old, her father, John Jeffrey McCullough, died of bronchopneumonia at 8:30 in the evening at the age of 57. He had been ill for a little while, but once he caught the pneumonia he was dead within three days.5,6,7 Mary Alice McCullough was at various points in her life possibly a switchboard operator (something to do with the telephone), a landlady, a deli manager, and someone who "counted money."7 On 29 July 1941, when Mary was 40 years, 9 months and 29 days, her mother, Sadie, died of "carcinoma of omentum [a fold of the peritoneum connecting the abdominal viscera with the stomach] & stomach" at the age of 68 years, 11 months and 24 days. The underlying cause was "carcinoma of left breast", for which she had undergone an operation to remove the cancer the year before. She died at 6:45 p.m. in her own home.8 She was an owner and operator of Dock's Dairy Store from 1945 to 1964.9 On 8 August 1950 her husband James died at age 51 in Girard, of a sudden heart attack (possibly related to his diabetes condition), leaving Mary a widow at 49 years old. He died in his own home at 6:30 in the evening.3,10 Mary Alice McCullough died on 28 May 1966 at Northside Hospital in Girard, Ohio, at age 65 of a heart ailment (she had chronic heart disease). She died at 9:30 p.m. on a Saturday evening.11,12,9 Mary Alice McCullough's obituary was published on 30 May 1966 in an unidentified Ohio newspaper. It read, in part, that she "had lived in Girard for 48 years and owned and operated Dock's Dairy Store from 1945 to 1964. She was a member of the America Legion Auxiliary.". As listed in the obituary, Mary was survived by, her son Dr. William James Daugherty, her daughter Mary Alice Daugherty, her brothers Thomas Joseph McCullough, John Charles McCullough and Robert Francis McCullough, her sisters Clarice Agatha McCullough, Sara Elizabeth McCullough and Catherine Louella McCullough.9 Friends were asked to call at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard, Ohio, Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. in St. Rose Church on the Wednesday morning following her death.9 She was buried in (probably) Girard, Trumbull County, Ohio.9 |
