Dr. John McMillan attended Fagg's Manor Academy, a college preparatory school, in Chester County, Pennsylvania, say 1766 . He studied under the tutelage of Dr. Samuel Blair.4 Dr. John McMillan graduated in 1772 from Princeton University (Nassau Hall) in New Jersey, during the time when Dr. John Witherspoon was President of the College at Princeton. Dr. Witherspoon was from a wealthy Scottish family, and he licensed to preach the gospel at the age of 18. He was sent as a representative of the people of New Jersey to the Congress of United America, and his signature appears on the Declaration of Independence. During his time at Princeton, John "was one day so impressed by his solitary reflections of truth and duty that he became the subject of a sudden conversion, and, in consequence, upon graduating studied theology with Dr. Robert Smith of Pequea.5 On 6 August 1776, Dr. John McMillan married Catherine Brown, daughter of William Brown, in Brandywine, York County, Pennsylvania.1 Dr. John McMillan was pastor of the Chartiers Presbyterian Church for fifty years say 1782 in Washington County (Chartiers Township), Pennsylvania.2 Dr. John McMillan died in 1828.6 Dr. John McMillan died on 16 November 1833 in Canonsburg, Washington County, Pennsylvania, at age 81.1,4 |
