Mary Josephine Karl, daughter of Louis E. Karl and Cordelia Steinbaugh, was born on 13 March 1916 in Ohio.1
Mary Josephine Karl was Roman Catholic. In 1923 Mary Josephine Karl moved with her family to Los Angeles, California, from Ohio. They were seeking a better climate that would have a beneficial effect on Cora's health. Initially the family lived with Edna Steinbaugh (either Cora's sister or sister-in-law).1,2,3,4 Mary Josephine Karl was a nun in the Dominican Order and a second-grade teacher at a Catholic school.1 She took the religious name of Sister Mary Rosaleen.1 The obituary written for Mary Josephine describes her as "suffering great pain from her illness, which she bore with fortitude and patience." A month after her death, her mother wrote a letter to her niece, Rita, and included a description about Mary's last few weeks. Here are some excerpts: --"But for weeks while she taught she ate practicly [sic] nothing and coughing all the time." --"She swelled up so bad and her stomach filled with fluid. She got so heavy that it took her father and brother to lift her for me. She was covered with tumors outside and in. She coughed so hard and so much." --"She never murmured a word of complaint, suffered all in silence to the last, she ask for nothing except that no one but her mother take care of her. She was a very modest child."3 Mary Josephine Karl died on 16 March 1939 in Los Angeles, California, at age 23 of cancer, possibly of the stomach; died at home at 9:30 a.m.1 Mary Josephine Karl was buried in Los Angeles, St. Mary's Church.1 Mary Josephine Karl's obituary was published on 31 March 1939 in an unidentified California newspaper. It read, in part, that she died "surrounded by her family...at her home." It goes on to say that, "Twice before, Mary Karl had offered herself to God to serve Him as a nun in the Dominican Order. Both times ill health forced her to return home. But before leaving the convent last July, she made a private profession in the Third Order of St. Dominic, perhaps because Sister Mistress realized that not by community life but by lonely suffereing would God make this child acceptable to Himself. At school opening in September she started to teach the second grade at Sacred Heart Grammar School. In spite of ill health, she continued until January of this year, the beginning of her last illness. Lying, or rather sitting on her bed of pain for over two months she suffered intensely but patiently and with such resignation that she was a source of edification to all who saw her.". As listed in the obituary, Mary was survived by, her parents Louis E. Karl and Cordelia Steinbaugh, her brothers Brother Pauline and Russell T. Karl, her sister Colleen Karl.1 |
