"He sold this farm to Jacob Shonk [his father-in-law] in 1850 and then moved to a large farm in Dover Township on the Dover-Winfield road where [he and his wife Susanna] resided the rest of their lives."4,5 In 1842, Jonathan Auman married Susanna Shonk, daughter of Jacob Shonk and Martha Magdalena France, in Tuscarawas County, Ohio.2 Jonathan Auman was working as a carpenter in 1850.6 Jonathan appeared in the 1850 US Federal Census of Tuscarawas County (Sugar Creek Township), Ohio, enumerated 3 December 1850. He was recorded as the head of a household that also included Susanna, Sarah, Martha and Henry. Susanna was his wife, and the other three his children.. They lived at dwelling number 139. Enumerated as living nearby was George Auman, his father, along with Peter and Leah Auman, who were probably his brother and sister; they lived next door.. Karl, Jacob Karl, Valentin Karl and Elisabeth) received part of Johann Georg Ludwig Karl's estate. The handwritten document from Peter is very difficult to decipher with great accuracy, but it appears that Johann's widow Elisabeth received $573.06, his son John Karl perhaps as much as $175, his son Valentine about $200, and his son Jacob nearly $8. Peter paid himself $47.68 as "Commission to Administrator". Jonathan Auman, the father-in-law of Johann's son Peter, received $42. The money seems to have come mostly from the sale of land, although which plot of land in particular is not known at this time.10 Jonathan appeared in the 1880 US Federal Census of Tuscarawas County (Dover Township), Ohio, enumerated 1 June 1880. He was recorded as the head of a household that also included his wife, Susan, his daughter Rebecca. They lived at an area populated by farmers and laborers.
